It’s a big one at Anfield in the last of the Match Day 3 fixtures, as defending champions Liverpool play host to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side, who have high hopes of making the top four this season.
Both sides have started the season well – Arsenal impressing at Fulham and grinding past West Ham, and Liverpool in outgunning Leeds United before proving too much for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
It was honours even between the sides last season, Liverpool winning 3-1 in this one, but Arsenal coming out on top 2-1 at the Emirates in the reverse fixture.
Arsenal also took the bragging rights in the Community Shield matchup last month, beating Liverpool on pens after a 1-1 draw.
Both sides do have maximum points so far, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. Liverpool looked uncharacteristically dodgy at the back against Leeds, and could be at risk against an Arsenal side with clear strength is in the attacking third.
Arsenal meanwhile have only beaten a newly promoted side and limped bast a West Ham outfit who had previously played awfully in their season opener. It’s pretty hard to read exactly where they lie in relation to last season on the back of those displays.
Anfield may not be quite so imposing as it generally is, but playing in their spiritual home still counts in favour of a Liverpool side who, it should be remembered, were miles better than the rest of this division overall last season.
With the addition of Thiago in midfield and Diogo Jota as a flying winger backup, there’s strength in numbers. The Reds will take all three points here, but it won’t be easy.
Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal
