Despite being regarded as possibly one of the contenders in the 2019 Singapore Premier League, Hougang United were handily beaten by Tampines Rovers 5-1.
Things were especially difficult for the Cheetahs but after going down to 10 men after Justin Hui was sent off in the 50th minute, it went from difficult to impossible.
At that point, Tampines only had a 1-0 lead behind a goal by Irwan Shah and despite Faris Ramli’s penalty which equalised the proceedings, four goals in the final 30 minutes spelled disaster for the hosts.
After the match, Hougang coach Clement Teo spoke and gave his thoughts on the battle.
He said: “Yes, the match was frustrating in terms of the result. But, if you’re talking about effort, I can’t fault my players. When you are a man short against a quality team like Tampines, you have to face the consequences. I’m not worried about this result.”
