India stole a crucial away point after taking on the Asian champions Qatar in their second qualifying match for 2022 FIFA World Cup in Doha on Tuesday.

Having lost to Oman 2-1 after conceding two late goals, India manager Igor Stimac fielded a cautious team and managed to hold their fort till the last second.

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu made numerous crucial saves, putting in a captain’s performance in the absence of Sunil Chhetri. Sandesh Jhingan, Adil Khan and Udanta Singh put in commendable shifts too.

And what better way to celebrate this storming result with the ‘Viking Clap’?

India coach Igor Stimac highlighted the gulf between his team’s modest facilities and the lavish infrastructure enjoyed by Qatar as he warned his players to keep their heads down following the surprise result.

“We have two stopwatches and lots of willingness to learn everyday,” he said at the post-match press briefing. The area around the stadium was quiet following the match however with the crowd dispersing quickly and calmly.

India will next take on Bangladesh on October 15 in the Group E clash of the World Cup 2022 qualifiers.
